TANF legislation

Hello,

One of the novice case areas this year for CX was re-evaluating TANF. Here is an article I received about potential new legislation, cut from Poverty Action Network:

"TAKE ACTION: TANF must work for working families

We all hope that if we face a job loss, become disabled or want to gain more skills, we will have support and opportunities. In this time of economic crisis, strong social support systems like TANF are more important than ever to help families meet their basic needs and lay the foundation for economic recovery. TANF is a program that provides basic cash assistance for parents and their dependent children who have incomes so low that they are not able to meet their basic needs.



In order to find work and help rebuild our state's economy, parents must have access to education and training, as well as childcare they can rely on. Several forward-thinking lawmakers are looking to redesign and improve our state's TANF program. House Bill (HB) 3141 would create more training and education options for recipients, as well as authorize 12 months of childcare for parents who participate in federally-funded Head Start programs or in our state's Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP). Currently the TANF program has limited opportunities for education and only authorizes parents to receive two or three months of childcare. HB 3141 is scheduled for a hearing tomorrow in the Senate Human Services and Corrections Committee. Your lawmakers must hear from you TODAY.

Send your lawmakers a message or call them toll-free at 1-800-562-6000 and tell them that "In this economy, parents on TANF should have more access to education and training, as well as childcare they can rely on. Please support HB 3141."

Speed Reading and Judging

Above is a link to a Rostrum article about speed reading and the decline of debate. I think the take-away lesson for this article is that students should be judged by a variety of judges- including those who do not like speed. It's about adaptation to your judge. A useful article for both parent judges and students.

Kamiak HS results

Now for Kamiak HS recap:

Nate Cancilla is going to state! The senior BHS debater took second place in Open Lincoln-Douglas debate this weekend, and earned a bid to compete on March 19th and 20th. Rose Osborne, from SHS, actually took third place overall, but because of the weird hidden-semis and finals, did not take home a trophy. She did however win 1st place speaker. Julia Hobart (BHS) and Ben Kaas (SQHS) took 8th and 9th place speaker. Oscar Aguirre came in #5 in his division, Junior Varsity.

In Policy Debate, Gordon Friedman and Mitsu Gunsolus took 2nd place. They already have a bid to state, so it was nice that they let another team take first.

Ann Osborne graciously stepped in to drive (again), and Sally Sheedy also judged and drove. Our parent volunteers are the backbone of the team, and they make it possible for the students to participate. Jeff Bennett, a former Congress nationals alum, judged for us. Kayla Janyk also helped us out again so we could bring more students. Jo Kaas also thought ahead to the needs of the students and sent along note pads and snacks. I was pleasantly surprised to see the oranges were a hit!

I hope to see every student at practice this week, and everyone else at the season celebration.

Drivers Needed for Last of Season

Hello Parents and Guardians,

We really need drivers and judges to pitch in for the remainder of the season. If it is important for your student to participate in the qualifying tournaments in order to go to state or nationals, please consider driving for the team. If I am the only driver, I can take 5 students at the most.

State Qualifiers, Feb 23 (Edmonds, Tuesday night): Aly, need two more drivers/judges

National Qualifier Tournament, March 4 & 5 (Mukilteo): We will return the evening of the 4th, and leave again the afternoon of the 5th. I could have different drivers both days.

State Debate Tournament (UPS, All day) March 19th&20th: Aly, need one more driver and judge

You do NOT drive your own vehicle. We get vehicles from the district, and gas is paid for by the district. Judging is not as scary as it seems, and you'll be saving the team $200+ if you judge. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you.
