Kamiak HS Novice Tournament Invite

Hello debaters,

Below I have included the invitation to the Kamiak Novice Tournament in Mukilteo. This is a Saturday-only tournament, on Oct 15th. We will leave from Bellingham HS's bus turnaround at 7:45am, so please be sure to arrive at least a few minutes beforehand.

We will return around 9pm that evening, and will have students call parents once we depart Kamiak.

Please bring food for the day. The school is selling pizza by the slice at noon, so you may also want to bring money. Students cannot leave campus without an adult, so please plan to eat your meals at Kamiak HS.

Please dress appropriately for the tournament. Business wear (collared shirts, slacks, suits, etc.) is always good, but at the very least no jeans or active wear.

If returning debaters are coming to judge, please bring flow paper and something reliable to time with.

Thank you and remember that the deadline to sign up for the tournament is tomorrow. Drops after the 7th will incur a penalty fee. Questions? Please email/call.

Recognition: 6:30 p.m. or ASAP

Rules: State rules as usual, apply to everything. Please refer to the WIAA rule book.

Who is a novice debater? All first year debaters are novice. Second year debaters who have competed in less than six rounds of competition in district, league or invitational tournaments shall be considered novice.

Who can judge? Second year debaters can judge at this tournament. This is usually considered a fun opportunity for these students. We will accept any second year student, for IE’s if you feel they are capable of rendering qualified, thoughtful, kind, and intelligent ballots. For Debate, sign up students to judge who have competed in that particular form of debate (CX, LD, Controversy) and can produce constructive ballots for competitors.
Events

Cross Examination/Team Debate. Times 8-3-5. 6 Minutes down time per team.
Note: We will be using the Novice Case Areas that were voted on at the coaches meeting this fall.

Lincoln Douglas Debate. Time 6-3-7-3-4-6-3. 4 minutes down time per side. Note: We will use the November/December L.D. topic.

Controversy: We will use the N.F.L. rules and ballots for this event. Note: We will use the November Controversy topic.

Individual Events:

Oratory…
…is an ten minute memorized speech in which you try to persuade the audience to accept your point of view.

Expository Speech…
…is a presentation in which you demonstrate a skill or explain an idea, or inform the audience of a subject. Visual aids are encouraged. Notecards can be used. Time length is a maximum of eight minutes.

Interpretive Reading…
…is an eight minute reading of a combination of prose and poetry all connected by a theme.

Dramatic Interpretation…
…is a memorized and dramatic performance, cut from a play with a length of no more than ten minutes.

Humorous Interpretation…
…is a memorized and humorous performance, cut from a play, with a length of no more than ten minutes.

Extemporaneous Speaking…
…is a seven minute speech on one of three topics you were given 30 minutes earlier. Current events are the main subject. One note card can be used during your presentation.

Impromptu Speaking…
…choosing from a list of 3 topics students have a total of 6 minutes to think and then speak on their topic.



Editorial Comment…
…students perform a written speech on a topic of general concern. The length of this speech is 1:45 to 2:00 in length.

Dual Dramatic Interpretation…
…this is a memorized performance of a play by two people. Maximum length for this event is 10 minutes.

Note: At the novice tournament only, memorized events can be performed with a script. Judges will give preference, however, to debaters who memorize their pieces.

Other information:

Timing: All timing should be done with a stop watch.

Tab Room: The tab room will be in the 3rd floor library and will be open to coaches.

Student Accommodations: Students can leave their materials in the commons.

Judges: Pick up ballots n the first floor teachers lounge (judges lounge) return ballots to the library.

Meal arrangements: We will be selling pizza by the slice at noon. Otherwise there are many fast food establishments less than a mile from the school.

Parking: you can park in any of the school parking lots.

Registration will be in the library on the 3rd floor of the main building at Kamiak.

No practice Friday, 9/30

No practice on Friday, 9/30 at BHS. If you can't make another practice this week, that's fine.

Changes to Tournament Schedule

Hello Debaters and Parents,


Please note there has been a few changes to the original tournament schedule I sent home with your student last week. Kamiak HS (in Mukilteo) is offering a one-day practice tournament for first year debaters on 10/15. This is a great opportunity to see what a tournament is like. Second year and up debaters are welcome to judge. Students need to confirm with me by Friday, October 7th if they are attending. On the 15th we will depart from the schools at 6:30am and return around 9pm.


The other change is for the weekend of Oct 28th/29th. The Glacier Peak tournament has been cancelled, so we will instead attend Gig Harbor HS's tournament. We will stay overnight in Gig Harbor.


I will need parent drivers for both tournaments so please let me know as soon as possible if you can help. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted beforehand.

2011-2012 Season Update

Hello all,

August is almost over, so hopefully your thoughts are turning towards school starting. Debate will start the second week of school, on Monday the 12th. Your help is appreciated in recruiting new blood (er, debaters). I will not have an official tournament schedule until the 17th of September, when the state coaches meeting will be held in Federal Way. However, I do have a practice schedule:

Mondays 5:15-6:15p @ SHS, room 109-110 computer lab
Tuesdays 5:15-6:15p @ BHS, Career Center
Wednesdays 5:15-6:15p @ SHS, room 109-110
Thursdays 5:30-6:30p @ SQHS, room B112 computer lab
Fridays 5:15-6:15p @ BHS, Career Center

I decided to go with a later start time for several reasons: One, it allows for students doing the flex option to still attend practices, and two, we are able to have 5 practices a week instead of two. Lastly, it allows us to practice in a computer lab at each school. Since I (the coach, Aly) work full time, this is the best compromise.

For this year, students will still need to attend two practices each week. You are welcome to attend more, as we have five options. Students do not have to strictly attend the practices at their school, but can attend any two at any school. I hope this schedule means more students from SQHS will get involved, and students won't have to travel to other schools if it is a hardship.

Yes, it does mean we only have an hour for each practice. This will require students to be focused for the duration, and not waste time. It also means putting in time at home, which has always been an expectation (just the nature of the beast).
