Hi Everyone,

If you're interested in debate camp this summer, whether you are LD or CX, check out one option below. I don't have any affiliation with debate camps, so please contact the camps directly with questions:

the whitman national debate institute

policy-cx, lincoln-douglas, and public forum

highly individualized instruction with small 4 to 8 student labs with a 4 to 1 student to instructor ratio.

beginners, intermediates, advanced debaters welcome.

and lady debaters, think about attending the WDI. I would NOT suggest this as your ONLY option for debate camp, but it's a great way to connect with strong women debaters from across the country and is a lot of fun http://womensdebateinstitute.org/

  2. also, don't forget about the assitance league scholarships. check with your school's career center, they'll prolly have the application there.

I'll make my plug for debate camp here: this is the SINGLE BEST WAY TO GET BETTER AT DEBATE. I cannot stress how important camp is to getting better, for a couple of key reasons
The first is that while I would say we try to keep you guys as prepared as possible, it's impossible to compare our team's relatively small amount of funding to that of many private schools from across the nation, who have a dozen elite college debaters cutting cards for them/working with them. Debate camp is a) a means of making up for this, in that you'll have access to not only really really good college debaters, but also some of the top college coaches in the nation (particularly at the GDI), and b) you'll be surprised at the teams you can beat at the camp tournament. These rich kids have been spoonfed debate to them, whereas you guys have had to learn everything the hard way. Gordo and I beat kids with bids at camp no problem.
The second reason debate camp is so great is something I've tried to engrain into your brains: Debate is ALL about who you know. Debate camp is a way to impress people that will probably be judging you throughout the year. If you don't think that perception and getting repped out isn't a big part of debate, then you're sorely mistaken. If people remember you as being really good at debate from camp, they'll be more likely to think you're really good during the season as well. This probably means you should work your butts off to impress your lab leaders, and don't slack off.
The third is that it's a great way to make connections for college- this kindof goes hand in hand with what I said above. Most of your lab leaders are going to be current college coaches or current college debaters. Impressing them means they'll be more likely to want you to go to their school in the future.
The fourth is that it's fun! I'm willing to bet 1/2 of my facebook friends I know through debate camp. Debaters are cool people and it's a blast to chill with them for three weeks. It's basically like being in college for a few weeks. That being said, DO NOT DO ANYTHING STUPID. I MEAN IT. I will find out, and I will not be pleased.
The point is, if you like to win and you like debate, then you should probably go to camp. It's not that bad as far as money goes if you apply for the assistance league scholarship and if you apply to scholarships through camps (Gonzaga is very generous in their scholarships, just sayin').
Also, when you get into camp, email me at mitsu.gunsolus@gmail.com so I can help you pick your lab leaders (counslers). I'll be able to tell you who'll be helpful and who'll be a weirdo.
K my rant is over, now go prep for state.
