Assignment
Due on 9/22 before midnight:
- Take note of your current body posture. Are you sitting down? Are you reclined backwards? Slumped forward? Shoulders forward? Arms crossed? Legs crossed? Write down your observations.
- Watch this TED Talk on body language: http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are.html
- Now that you are more conscious of your body language, look back at your notes before watching the video. What did your body language convey? How will you improve your body language during debates? Classroom presentations? Post your insights to the blog. Hit the comment link below this post.
While working on projects on my computer, I cross my legs and hunch forward, which is apparently a sign that I feel powerless around my screen (not sure if it's actually how I'm feeling or for comfort purposes). On the other hand, I know that when I'm in a new/uncomfortable class, I will try to make myself seem smaller and try to fold myself inward because I know that I'm a shy person, who's not big on human interaction or communication with people I don't know. It's the same during debate rounds. However, even if it would be nice for someone to sit with their back straight and their arms open during a round, for flowing purposes, it seems very difficult to do. Speaking wise, it is feasible to stand up straight (and even step a little bit in front of your opponent with asking/being asked questions).
ReplyDeleteI have two very different types of posture. One day I will stand up and walk very straight and be very opened up and the next day I might be hunched over while walking. I also will sit two very different ways without and conscious thought about the differences in the way I sit. At school I sit back and open up sometimes with my hands behind my head and generally slouching. However on some days I will come to school with my back bent and just do my work slumped forward. Or heck I might even do these two different postures at several different times in the day. In debates I will generally lean back and open up especially if I know we are winning on something and I definitely open up while speaking. I guess what this means is that I go back and forth between powerful and powerless several times in my day. However I notice I mostly cross my ankles and scrunch up while I am at home. So... I'm not really sure what that says about me. What I do know is that I am usually quiet, polite, and respectful, and closed (physically) around people I really know, and very open (physically) around friends, and a lot of people I don't know. Weird.
