Debate Season Wrap-up Info + Tournament News

Hello All,

Don't forget! This Sunday, March 14th @ 6:30pm is our season wrap-up party. Please join us at the Whatcom Volunteer Center (725 N State St) to reflect on our season, say goodbye to seniors, wish our state participants good luck, and look forward to next year!

This is a potluck event, so please bring a dish to share for 10-15 people. If your last name begins with...

A-G: Bring a salad-type dish
H-P: Bring a dip/veggies/fruit/bread/etc. or entree item
Q-Z: Bring a dessert or drink

We also had several tournament results come in over the weekend. On Friday we attended the National Qualifier Tournament at Snohomish HS. We had one team, Will McShane and Conner Helms from Sehome, qualify as an alternate to the National Tournament. Good job, team!

Mitsu Gunsolus and Gordon Friedman went to the Gonzaga Tournament also over the weekend. Mitsu's dad, Jim Gunsolus, went as their transport and judge. The team went 4-2, and were octo-finalists. It was no small feat considering the caliber of competition at this tournament.

Rose Osborne from Sehome HS is going to the State Tournament on March 19th and 20th! She was an alternate coming out of Friday's competition, but before we were even home she had been called up to join. We have a total of 6 students coming to State now: Nate Cancilla, Rose Osborne, Conner Helms, Will McShane, Mitsu Gunsolus, and Gordon Friedman.

We will have NO practice this week. It seems our students have left us for spring sports, but we'll be in touch for the following week.

State Tournament Info, March 19th-20th

The State Debate Tournament will be March 19th and 20th, Friday/Saturday. If you have qualified for state, it is important that you read the following:

1) The tournament takes place all day Friday, March 19th (starting at 8;30AM). Last year we left for UPS the evening beforehand, so anticipate that we will leave on March 18th around 6pm (upon approval from district)

2) Myself and one other chaperon/judge will come along

3) The district will be providing hotel rooms for us, and a meal stipend.

4) The tournament is hosted at University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma.

5) The tournament is double elimination, so once you lose two rounds you are eliminated from the tournament. We will return to Bellingham when our last team is eliminated- so I'm hoping late Saturday!

State Qualifier Results

Hello Debate Supporters,

We have good news coming out of the State Qualifier tournament last night in Edmonds. Conner Helms and Will McShane from Sehome HS qualified for the state tournament and will compete against other 3A schools (including BHS's Mitsu Gunsolus and Gordon Friedman). Conner was also first place speaker, so he took home a nice plaque.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Rose Osborne tied for the 3A bid to state. She will be competing at the National Qualifer Tournament on Friday, March 5th to determine the tie-breaker. She had to compete against other team members, so it was not an easy win. If Rose goes onto state (we know she can do it) then she will compete against BHS's Nate Cancilla.

There is no practice today, in case you didn't guess. We got home after midnight last night (an hour later than expected), so I'm sure everyone could use the rest.

Thank you to Lisa McShane who drove the Sehome students. She was a great sport to hang out so late with us. Grant Resick and Jeff Bennett also judged for us, for which we are grateful. Grant also put in a lot of hours to get the LDers ready for the new topic.

There are a few things to know about the end of the season:

1) All students need to have turned in their $70 team fee by end of March ($30 if on free and reduced lunch, or $35 if started after December)

2) Students are welcome to come to practice even if not going onto state. We will resume practice on Tuesday of next week.

3) State tournament is March 19th and 20th, all day both days. If you can judge/drive, please let me know.

4) Our season wrap-up will take place March 14th. It will be held at 725 N State St, the Whatcom Volunteer Center. They are letting us use their conference room. This will be a potluck, and I will send out an invitation soon.

State Qual Information

Hello,

Here is all the state qualifier information for the participating students:

Feb 23rd (Tuesday): Depart at 1:30pm

Lisa McShane will be driving the Sehome HS van with the following students, departing from Sehome HS:
- Will
- Conner
- Rose
- Lee
- Jeff Bennett (judge)

I (Aly) will be driving from BHS with the following students, departing from BHS:
- Julia
- Emiliana
- Oscar (pick up at 1:45 from SQHS)
- Grant Resick (judge)

We will return between 10pm and 11pm that night, since the last round has to start before 9pm.

Food will be for sale, but last year it was all chips, soda, and candy bars so plan ahead to bring food.

All students must get missed homework from teachers on MONDAY, for anything they will miss in class on Tuesday. Going to a debate tournament does not excuse you from missing homework. Also, you must have NO unexcused absences and you must attend all classes prior to leaving on Tuesday.

I will not be at practice on Wednesday, Feb 24th. LDer's may talk to Grant about practice that day, or what they should work on in their own time.

Students who qualify at this next tournament should plan to go to state on Friday/Saturday, March 19th/20th. This is a two-day, all day tournament.
