Dear Friends and Family,
Thank you for taking a moment to learn about our 2009-2010 season. This year the Bellingham School District Debate Team will compete in seven tournaments, including the opportunity to compete at colleges and universities in Washington State. Last year one of our teams ranked second in state, and two students qualified for the national tournament. We continue to out-perform other debate programs despite our numbers and limited resources.
As debaters, we know this activity is an investment in our education. Debate is a powerful tool for developing critical thinking, research, reading, and writing skills. Our purpose is to discuss, and find solutions to, many of the issues facing the world today. Most valuable of all, my peers and I are inspired to become life long learners.
To accomplish the goals of the team, the debaters, Coach Aly, and our parents planned a long list of activities to raise funds. These include a garage sale, concession stand sales at basketball games, flash drive sales, and…this donation appeal letter.
The team decided to create a list of important people in our lives. I hope you don’t mind that I have included you. I am requesting that you sponsor me with a donation. It can be awkward to ask for support – even for a good cause like this – but a contribution from you can help us pay for transportation, judging fees, tournament accommodations, or research materials.
The confidence you express in us through your support will make a huge difference to me. I am extremely grateful for your contribution, and will do my best to make you proud.
A note from the coach:
I’m honored to return for a second year of coaching the Bellingham District Debate Team. These students are truly passionate about their activity, and it shows in the success we experienced last season. Due to the school district suffering financially, we have experienced several cuts in our funding. We hope you will consider supporting us so we can continue to keep students enthusiastic about learning.

• $25 = one debater’s entry fee for a 2-day event • $50 = travel costs for one student at a local tournament • $100 = one judge’s fee for a two-day tournament • $600= sponsorship of one debater for the season
