Don't forget! Parent meeting tomorrow + Sedro results
Hello Everyone,
Just a reminder that our parent/guardian meeting is tomorrow, 11/19 from 8-8:30pm. We'll just take the last half hour of practice to have volunteer sign-ups. This is our fundraiser for the year so please don't miss this planning meeting! We meet in Sehome computer lab room 109.
The Glacier Peak tournament is the weekend after ours, on 12/20-12/21. Please let me know by 12/9 if you plan on attending so I can get transportation, judges, and lodging lined up. Parents, please also let me know if you can help with judging or driving to this tournament. The schools will provide the vehicles and gas and our team pays hotel.
And now results from this past weekend's tournament:
First, I need to thank our tireless (okay, maybe not tireless) volunteer Laura Livingston for once again helping with judging and driving. We appreciate her willingness to drive her own vehicle, too. Please be sure to thank Laura when you see her!
Bellingham's Marina Rossman and William Woods took 1st place in open policy debate. This was the first policy debate tournament for Marina so we are pleased with the results!
Second place in open policy was Sehome's Connor Carpenter and Felipe Rivera. It was tough to match their teammates in finals and they did a great job.
Third place in open policy debate was a hybrid team of Squalicum's Sam Sandoz and Sehome's Bryce Henshaw. Congrats to Sam on her first policy debate tournament and also congrats to Bryce for being brave and competing in open (this is only her second tournament ever!)
In novice policy debate, Bellingham's Adele Clark and Julia Lafortune took third place. Way to go, ladies.
This was certainly a first- everyone came home with a trophy!

Homework due 11/17
Due on 11/17: organize your flows from the Sedro Woolley tournament. Decide which speech you would like to redo (choose a rebuttal speech, either aff or neg). Come prepared on Tuesday to do a rebuttal redo.
Second part of the homework- make sure you invite your parents to the Tuesday, Nov 19th meeting @ 8pm-8:30pm. We need 100% participation from our parents again to make our tournament a success!

Updates
Hi everyone,
Lots to cover in this email so I'll get to it:
1) November 15th and 16th is the Sedro Woolley tournament. Please reserve your spot by Friday November 8th. It takes me time to line up transportation, judges and registration so please don't delay! Here's the link to the invite: http://www.forensicstournament.net/tournamentdocs/1141-2014WoolleyInvite.pdf
We'll want to avoid the congestion of buses/cars so we'll leave at 2:30 from Sehome and Bellingham HS. Sehome students + Sam, meet Laura in the Sehome teacher lot (same as last meeting place). Bellingham students, meet me (Aly) at BHS where the district vans are parked, next to the baseball field.
I can only predict that we'll get back around 10:30pm on Friday. We'll need to leave again at 7am on Saturday. We will all depart Saturday from Bellingham HS.
Please be sure to pay your November $35 dues to your ASB in order to attend the tournament. Bring flow paper, food/money for concessions, pens, and professional clothing.
2) Our fundraiser and tournament is quickly coming up on December 14th. WWU debate team kindly hosts it for us. We will need parents and students to all participate in order to make this a success. Things we will need volunteers for: donating/preparing food for judges/coaches, judging, and outreach to school admin/teachers. We had 100% participation from parents last year and it was a great tournament. Come learn about volunteer positions on Tuesday, November 19th, from 8pm-8:30pm. We'll just use the last half hour of practice. We meet in room 109 at Sehome (our regular practice room). Hope you can attend!
3) Finally, results from the Snohomish Tournament this past weekend. First off, please be sure to thank Laura, our wonderful volunteer, for driving AND judging both days. Thank you thank you thank you!
Secondly, let's congratulate Sehome's Connor Carpenter and Felipe Rivera. They went 6-0 and won first place. Great start to the season!
Bellingham's Adele and Julia both jumped into open level policy debate in order to debate with Will. This was their second tournament and I am proud of them for challenging themselves. Will is a good mentor, too.
Duncan Ogg from Squalicum had the highest speaker points, averaging 28.5 (out of 30) each round. And Marina pulls ahead to have the most National Forensic League Points, earning Special Distinction.
Great job everyone. I look forward to another good showing at Sedro Woolley.

Kamiak and Snohomish Tournament
If you are planning on attending the Oct 19th Kamiak Tournament, please email me by Friday, October 11th. This is crucial so I can line up enough transportation and judges. The invite went out via email.
If you would like to go to Snohomish HS tournament (again, I emailed the invite) please email me by Friday, October 25th at the latest. Parents, please contact me if you can drive and judge. We are hosting a judge training on Oct 24th at 6:30pm at Sehome HS, room 109 (where we regularly practice on Tuesday/Thursdays). The more parents that participate the more money we save in judge fees!
Also, before students are eligible to compete/judge at the October 19th Kamiak tournament, you must complete the following:
- Activities/Athletic form signed and returned to your school's activities/athletic office
- $35 debate fees paid for October
- Team Expectations form signed and returned to me
- Paid for your ASB card, at your school's ASB office
Thank you and please email me!

Debate Practice Starts 9/10 @ 6:30pm @ Sehome HS room 109
Hello Returning and Interested Debaters,
Welcome to the new school year! I hope you are all enjoying a chance at a fresh start and I hope you make plans to achieve your academic (and personal) goals for the year. This email is to let you know that debate practice is starting very quickly! Our season begins Tuesday, September 10th. Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. We will meet at Sehome HS in computer lab 109. The exterior doors near the front office will likely be locked. Enter near the staff parking lot- I will have those doors unlocked. Remember that our team is Bellingham, Sehome, and Squalicum High Schools so anyone can attend practice at Sehome.
To get us quickly started, please stop by your Activities/Athletic office and pickup a participation packet. You will not need to fill out the physical supplemental pages. That's right- you do not need a physical to participate in debate! I have also attached the team expectations which you can read over, sign, and return.
Please bring your friends! It is not too late to join the team. Your $35 debate fee is due starting in October, September is free if you would like to first try it out.
You can always follow the team on our blog: www.bellinghamdebate.blogspot.com
I look forward to seeing returning students again, as well as meeting new students.

Hello,
For the 2013-2014 season we're doing something a little differently. To get the most out of our practices, students need to come prepared. So, in lieu of a Monday practice we'll have assignments due. These assignments will always be posted on the blog and they will be due at midnight on Sunday of each week. I'll get a chance to look at your responses and give feedback at Tuesday's practices.
Before the start of the season, returning students have homework due! By Sunday, September 8th, please post your answer to the following prompt. Simply click on the 'no comments' link and submit your responses.
Your assignment is to post:
Your assignment is to post:
why do you debate, how do you debate, and what is debate.
We'll also have you share at the first day of practice.
I'm looking forward to our new season!

State Quals Information for 2/26
Hi Everyone,
Congrats on making it this far! We have the State Qualifier on Tuesday, 2/26. It will be at Kamiak HS in Mukilteo. Students will be picked up at the following times:
1:30p SQHS (meet in lower lot where we park the school vans)
1:50p BHS (meet where we park BHS school vans, along fence by field)
2p SHS (meet in senior/student lot by anchor)
All students will need to be picked up at SQHS on Tuesday evening, approximately 10:30pm. We will call when leaving Kamiak.
Please remember to bring pens, flow paper, and clothes appropriate for debate. Please bring dinner since we won't have time to stop for food and the tournament will probably provide less than nutritious options. Thanks and good luck everyone!

Debate Central Leadership Camp
Periodically I will post information on scholarships and camps. Please contact the camp/foundation directly as I am not affiliated with any of these organizations. I'm merely forwarding on what I am sent. I hope you find something useful to further your debate skills.
------------------------
Debate Central is proud to announce an exciting opportunity from one of our partners!
"FOUR STAR LEADERSHIP" is a world-class leadership program that allows 50 of the top high school students in the United States to meet face-to-face with national and international leaders. The annual summer program offers a once in a lifetime opportunity, exposing them to some of the same policy briefings world leaders receive, and challenging them to form their own opinions on the issues. Students develop skills in teambuilding, persuasive speaking, persuasive writing, and collective problem solving.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for high school students to learn, to enhance their leadership skills and to potentially gain scholarships, internships, and recommendations. The program is built around the core principles of CHARACTER, COMMON VISION, COMMUNICATION, and CARING, principles that guided General Tommy Franks through his 38-year military career. These same principles form a platform of discovery for the next generation of America's leaders.
Who should attend?
The "Four Star" program is looking for top high school leaders from across America. Attendees should have the potential to build relationships and motivate peers to action. They should be quick on their feet, eager to engage in active dialogue, willing to develop independent ideas and able to communicate effectively.
Students and their schools will have an opportunity to receive:
1. A $2,500 individual scholarship for winning the persuasive speaking competition; and $2,500 for their school
2. A $2,500 individual scholarship for winning the editorial competition; and $2,500 for their school
3. $2,500 in scholarships divided between the top 4 students competing in the Student Congress; and $2,500 for their schools
4. Endorsements and recommendations
Applications are open now for this free program! Apply today!
E-mail Lauren Sabino lauren.sabino@ncpa.org, NCPA Director of Youth Programs, for more information.
