December 12, 2009
Dear Coach,
The Mount Vernon Debate team is pleased to invite you to the eleventh annual Mount Vernon Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament, January 22-23, 2010. We encourage your attendance for a great weekend of competition.
EVENTS: We will continue to offer the eight Washington State Individual Events in both open and novice divisions, open and novice Student Congress and Public Forum, and three divisions of LD and CX. All debaters will have six rounds of competition, then a final round in all divisions; three rounds and finals in IE’s; two sessions of Student Congress.
REGISTRATION: Registration this year will occur through the website http://www.forensictournament.net. Please do not email or fax registrations unless you absolutely cannot access the website. Problems? Questions? E-mail Charlie Potter at chazpotter@yahoo.com or contact by phone (cell) 360-223-3148.
Deadline for entries is Tuesday, January 19th (which is the day after MLK day, so please plan ahead) and tournament fees will be set at 4:00 p.m. that day. Drops after this time will not be deducted from the entry fee. Please make sure your entries are correct by reviewing them at forensictournament.net. Once the web site is closed, changes can be made via e-mail at chazpotter@yahoo.com until 2pm the day of the tournament; after 2pm make changes at registration. Please try to avoid last minutes changes as this slows down the start of the first round.
Problem with registration? Email chazpotter@yahoo.com. Problems with the e-mail? phone Charlie Potter by cell, 360-223-3148, at school, 360-428-6104/ext. 2198, or phone at home, 360-752-0041.
Housing: We are only an hour north of Seattle, but if you are coming from farther away, many hotels in our area are reasonably priced (see list p. 3). Please let me know if you would like us to provide housing in student homes (on a limited basis, so contact us early).
We look forward to a fun and exciting weekend of competition. See you soon,
Charlie Potter, Head Coach Andrew Oommen, Assistant Coach
To view this invite online go to http://www.forensicstournament.net
Entry Limitation: There are none until the tournament reaches room capacity. Enter as many debate teams, congress participants, or individual events as you wish.
Judging:
Each judge covers 6 IE entries and either 2 CX/PF entries or 3 LD entries. Experienced team members (not competing) may judge in the novice division. Adult judges are required for junior and open divisions. You must bring enough judges to cover all of your entries. We do not have judges for you to hire (unless you are traveling from outside the Puget Sound area – please contact us no later than Thursday January 14th). Uncovered entries may be dropped, starting with open division entries, or additional fees incurred.
Public Forum: Coaches or adults may judge: College debaters who are not coaches may not. Bring qualified judges!
Student Congress: For teams with five or more entries, provide an adult who can act as parliamentarian and/or scorer. They cannot also cover Pattern B IE’s.
Divisions:
CX/LD Debate: Novice, Junior, and Open
Public Forum Debate: Novice and Open
IE’s: Novice and Open
Student Congress: Novice and Open chambers
(Note: we reserve the right to collapse divisions or houses if justified by total entries)
LD: We will be using the NFL Lincoln-Douglas topic for Jan./Feb.: “Resolved: Economic sanctions ought not be used to achieve foreign policy objectives.”
Times are 6-3-7-3-4-6-3, with 4 minutes of prep.
CX: Times are 8-3-5, with 6 minutes of prep time. Novice teams no longer have any of the traditional limitations (the 5 limited case areas adopted by the WSFA and limitations on counterplans and kritiks ended in December). This means we could collapse the Open and Junior divisions or collapse the Novice and Junior divisions together!
PF: Conflicts with other debate events. We will be using the NFL PF topic for January: “Resolved: President Obama's plan for increasing troops in Afghanistan is in the United States' best interest.” We will use the official NFL ballots.
Student Congress: Two sessions of Student Congress will be offered Saturday which conflicts with Pattern B of Individual Events. We will use the bills collected in the WSFA 2009 Spring Student Congress Legislative Packet found online at http://www.wiaa.com/subcontent.aspx?SecID=327 (the “forensics” page, see left side of page for the STUDENT CONGRESS LEGISLATION PACKET). If you have trouble with this, email chazpotter@yahoo.com for a congress packet.
IE’s: It is suggested students enter one event per pattern, but double entering is allowed.
Conflict Pattern A: Extemp, Expos, DI, and Duo
Conflict Pattern B: Impromptu, Oratory, HI and IR (Pattern B conflicts with Student Congress)
Times: 10 minutes (no grace) for DI, DUO, Oratory, and HI
8 minutes (:30 sec. grace) for Expos and IR
7 minutes for Extemp and 6 minutes for IMP
See the state rules, which apply in all events: http://www.wiaa.com/ConDocs/Con277/Forensics%20Regs.pdf
State Qualification: This is a District One bid tournament, meaning that the top open-level District One competitor, not already qualified, who trophies in state speech events, LD, PF, CX, and the top three in Congress are automatically qualified for state in those events.
Fees: School registration fee is $20.00 ($20.00 more if you enter a second squad). $20.00 per CX team or PF team, $15.00 per LD entry, and $8.00 per IE or
Student Congress entry. Make checks payable to “Mount Vernon Debate”

Auburn Results + News for '10
Hopefully everyone is recuperating from this past weekend's Auburn tournament. We survived a broken down van, a flat tire, allergies, consecutive late nights- and the students still had a good time.
For Hae Bin it was her first tournament, and I am pleased at how well she and Kylie performed. Gordon and Mitsu joined us after a 2-day round robin tournament in Seattle, so for them it was truly a long weekend.
The big win of the weekend was Nate Cancilla, who was an Octo-finalist in Open Lincoln-Douglas. Congrats, Nate! If you see him, please let him know how pleased we are with his continued success.
Of course I wouldn't have survived this weekend without the extreme patience and generosity of two volunteers, Diane Gerner and Jean Melious. Diane was a trooper, judging for the first time, driving, and even brought snacks. We hope we haven't scared her from volunteering again. Jean, as the former coach, already knows what it's like to be spend two long days in a high school so we appreciate her return to help.
Then there is also Grant Resick who has been committed to helping our LD'ers at each practice, so I would also like to credit him for our success at the Auburn tournament.
Okay, for the news. Please keep checking your or your student's Fund Hub page. You can check it daily to see who has donated, or forward it to family/friends/co-workers that would like to donate. The url is www.fundbunch.com/(yourname)sdebatefund. For instance the Fund Hub for Lee Bartlett is: www.fundbunch.com/leesdebatefund (who, by the way is already halfway to his goal of $300!)
Lastly, for parents: we have the Mt. Vernon tournament coming up in January, 1/22-23. Here is who I have for drivers:
Mt. Vernon HS January 22&23 (not overnight):
Friday- Aly, Jim, Sally, need one more driver
Saturday- Aly, Jim, Becky, need one more driver
We will leave in the afternoon on Friday, return that evening and then spend all day there on Saturday. Thank you for your consideration! Our remaining tournament schedule looks like this:
Mt. Vernon January 22-23
Kamiak Feb 5-6
Western Washington National Qualifier Tournament March 4-6
State Tournament March 19-20
Please talk to your students early about participating since it makes less work for me.
For students, please note that Dec. 16th is our last practice before break. Tuesday, Jan. 5th we will resume practice again. The schedule for tomorrow and Wednesday is...
Tuesday 12/8: Go over ballots, follow up on feedback to work on
Wednesday 12/9: Flow drills (all CX), work on new topic (all LD)
See you tomorrow!

Debate Fundraising Letter for Fundbunch Site
Thank you for taking a moment to learn about our 2009-2010 season. This year the Bellingham School District Debate Team will compete in seven tournaments, including the opportunity to compete at colleges and universities in Washington State. Last year one of our teams ranked second in state, and two students qualified for the national tournament. We continue to out-perform other debate programs despite our numbers and limited resources.
As debaters, we know this activity is an investment in our education. Debate is a powerful tool for developing critical thinking, research, reading, and writing skills. Our purpose is to discuss, and find solutions to, many of the issues facing the world today. Most valuable of all, my peers and I are inspired to become life long learners.
To accomplish the goals of the team, the debaters, Coach Aly, and our parents planned a long list of activities to raise funds. These include a garage sale, concession stand sales at basketball games, flash drive sales, and…this donation appeal letter.
The team decided to create a list of important people in our lives. I hope you don’t mind that I have included you. I am requesting that you sponsor me with a donation. It can be awkward to ask for support – even for a good cause like this – but a contribution from you can help us pay for transportation, judging fees, tournament accommodations, or research materials.
The confidence you express in us through your support will make a huge difference to me. I am extremely grateful for your contribution, and will do my best to make you proud.
A note from the coach:
I’m honored to return for a second year of coaching the Bellingham District Debate Team. These students are truly passionate about their activity, and it shows in the success we experienced last season. Due to the school district suffering financially, we have experienced several cuts in our funding. We hope you will consider supporting us so we can continue to keep students enthusiastic about learning.
I thought you might be interested in how your contribution might be used:
• $25 = one debater’s entry fee for a 2-day event • $50 = travel costs for one student at a local tournament • $100 = one judge’s fee for a two-day tournament • $600= sponsorship of one debater for the season
We appreciate any support you can offer. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours,
Coach Aly Hoover

Fundraising on Tuesday
Please be prepared on Tuesday to send out e-letters to request donations. We're getting into the holiday season quickly and it's the perfect time to ask for someone to sponsor you. Last year our biggest fundraiser was simply writing letters to family and friends to solicit donations. We hope it will be an even bigger success this year due to our financial need.
As we discussed in practice, Squalicum is currently out of funds to attend tournaments. BHS will also be short after Auburn. The flash disk card sales were disappointing, as it seems not many students participated. This means it is all the more important to send out the e-letters. Students who do not participate will not be able to attend tournaments, since these tournaments are of great cost to us. To put it in perspective, Whitman cost about $1,230. Auburn will cost around $700. Our first fundraiser of the year, the garage sale, netted $700.
On Wednesday this week I mentioned that you will need to identify 10 people that you can ask for donations. We will be using FundBunch, an online tool that allows people to donate online. People are also welcome to donate cash/checks if they are uncomfortable using the secured pay site. Please bring email addresses of people, since we will be creating a page for each student. You will then email family/friends to have them view your page and donate. We will go through each step together.
Thank you and please remember those addresses!
P.S. Tuesday's practice will be held in Sehome's library since they are using the lab for testing.

College Debate Opportunities
Follow the above link to learn more about debating policy in college. Remember how debate is educational...well, that means colleges offer lots of scholarship opportunities to join their team. The link has information about the four colleges in WA that have policy debate. Of course other universities/colleges in the state also offer debate, but different forms (i.e. parli at WWU).
Please note the email that went out tonight- from now on we'll be practicing at Sehome HS. Whatcom MS students have been reshuffled to BHS, so they are short on space for after school activities. We'll be able to use the same lab that we occupy on Wednesdays. See you at 3:15 at Sehome on Tuesday!

Above is a link for the Washington Debate Coalition Round Robin Tournament. If we weren't going to Auburn it might be a good option. However, if you have your own transportation and funding for this tournament, you might consider it for the scholarship opportunities.

Poverty Stats
07:05 AM PDT on Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Associated Press
The level of poverty in America is even worse than first believed. A revised formula for calculating medical costs and geographic variations show that approximately 47.4 million Americans last year lived in poverty, 7 million more than the government's official figure. The disparity occurs because of differing formulas the Census Bureau and the National Academy of Science use for calculating the poverty rate.
--The NAS formula shows the poverty rate to be at 15.8 percent, or nearly 1 in 6 Americans, according to calculations released this week. That's higher than the 13.2 percent, or 39.8 million, figure made available recently under the original government formula. That measure, created in 1955, does not factor in rising medical care, transportation, child care or geographical variations in living costs. Nor does it consider non-cash government aid when calculating income. As a result, official figures released last month by Census may have overlooked millions of poor people, many of them 65 and older.
--About 18.7 percent of Americans 65 and older, or nearly 7.1 million, are in poverty compared to 9.7 percent, or 3.7 million, under the traditional measure. That's due to out-of-pocket expenses from rising Medicare premiums, deductibles and a coverage gap in the prescription drug benefit. About 14.3 percent of people 18 to 64, or 27 million, are in poverty, compared to 11.7 percent under the traditional measure. Many of the additional poor are low-income, working people with transportation and child-care costs.
--Child poverty is lower, at about 17.9 percent, or roughly 13.3 million, compared to 19 percent under the traditional measure. That's because single mothers and their children disproportionately receive non-cash aid such as food stamps. Poverty rates were higher for non-Hispanic whites (11 percent), Asians (17 percent) and Hispanics (29 percent) when compared to the traditional measure. For blacks, poverty remained flat at 24.7 percent, due to the cushioning effect of non-cash aid.
--The Northeast and West saw bigger jumps in poverty, due largely to cities with higher costs of living such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Census Bureau said it expedited release of the alternative numbers for this month because of the interest expressed by lawmakers and the Obama administration in seeing a fuller range of numbers. Legislation pending in Congress would mandate a switch to the revised formula, although the White House could choose to act on its own.
--Arloc Sherman, a senior researcher at the nonprofit Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said that because the revised formula factors in non-cash government aid, the amount of increase in poverty from 2007 to 2008 was generally smaller compared to the current measure.
-----Also released today: More people in the world now are 'urgently hungry' compared to any other time in history due to a global food shortage (WHO).

Kamiak Novice Tournament Invitation
Please put on your calendar Saturday, Oct 10th as the date for our first tournament. This is a practice tournament so all novices are encouraged to attend. It is designed to be a learning experience, and no-pressure. Returning debaters are welcome to judge and observe arguments about the topic. This would be good experience before Whitman.
Ask your parent to volunteer. We need two parent drivers or else we will be limited in the number of students we can transport.
We will depart from each school at 6:45AM. It is an early morning. Debates begin at 10AM, but we must register starting at 8AM. We will return at 10PM to each school.
Please bring food for the day. They will sell pizza by the slice at lunchtime, but a more healthy/cheaper option is to brown bag it. We will try to arrange a trip off campus for food if there is time.
Please RSVP by this Wednesday, 9/30.This includes returning debaters who would like to judge.
Thank you and I hope to have all the novices attend!

Research Topic List
Yesterday we assigned different topics for each group to do research on. Remember that this isn't a paper, but I want you to take notes on a variety of resources. I want to see that you used books, periodicals, and used credible sources online. I do not want to see just a random googling of the topic. Be prepared on Tuesday to share this information with the team, and you will also get to take notes on their topics.
Final wording of the 2009-2010 novice case area, updated today at 2pm:
5 Affirmative Case Areas:
1. Welfare reform -- substantially expand access to welfare, including eliminating some or all restrictions on TANF
2. Broadband Access -- expand Lifeline and Link-Up to include broadband
3. Medicaid for Immigrants -- eliminate immigration status requirements for Medicaid
4. Legal Services -- substantially increase funding and support for the Legal Services Corporation
5. Head Start -- substantially increase funding and support to Head Start programs
Tuesday we will hit the ground running. Earlier this week I posted the schedule, so remember what we'll be working on. I'm going to be busy making copies this weekend so that you will all have your evidence to practice with shortly. Please work with your partner to determine good days for practice debates. Returning Policy Debaters will help with novice debates, while LD'ers will be doing their own practice debates using older topics.
9/29 Tuesday @ BHS: Group topic discussion, present your assigned topic, learning the building blocks of an Aff case. LD'ers: Create a schedule for practice debates amongst selves; share notes from debate camp.
9/30 Wednesday @ SHS: draft aff case, practice in groups. Start neg lecture if time allows. LDers continue w/ practice debates.
10/1 Thursday @ WWU library: research aff case; collect on-case neg evidence
For week of 10/5: Remember everyone must attend the Tuesday/Wednesday practice in order to go to Kamiak.
10/6: Neg args/practice debates
10/7: Topicality/practice debates

Welcome To Our Blog
We're into our second week of debate, and I'm impressed with the turn out at Sehome and Bellingham. If you're new to the team I encourage you to ask any questions you have and use other debaters as a resource. I'm sure many people feel overwhelmed at first, but I promise it will all make sense soon!
Here is the agenda for practices this week. Please note you are only required to come to two practices, but all practices are crucial to attend in the beginning as you learn more about the activity:
9/22 Tuesday @ BHS: Overview of debate structure, demo policy debate w/ Mitsu and Gordo
9/23 Wednesday @ SHS: Nominations for debate club officers, sign up for topic resource, demo Lincoln-Douglas debate w/ Nate and Julia
9/25 Friday @ WWU: Open time to research assigned topic
9/29 Tuesday @ BHS: Group topic discussion, present your assigned topic, resource sign-up
9/30 Wednesday @ SHS: Affirmative lecture, draft aff case
10/1 Thursday @ WWU library: research aff case
We're not that far away from our first tournament on 10/17, so please note we'll be putting in more hours than usual to get ready. Thanks team and keep up the enthusiasm!
P.S. This weekend Conner, Kylie, Kaitlin and I got to attend a mini debate camp at UW. We had some great presenters layout the foundation of policy debate for us. I hope we can bring more people next year. We had fun exploring campus (read: got lost) and meeting new beginning debaters. Below are some resources Jim Hanson, the Whitman debate director, is sharing with us:
